I recently had the opportunity to see Tony Robbins live at his Unleash The Power Within event in New York.

To tell the truth, I hadn’t been a huge fan. I had seen his movie about a year ago and thought it was one long promo reel… not for me.

But, when my friend, Julia Pimsleur, said she was pulling together a group of entrepreneurs to join – many for the second or third time – I immediately said “yes!” If there was something to be learned, some mind hack to be had, I’m in!

The bottom line? Tony is amazing!

He’s truly an incredible man. He has to be to command a room of 14,000 raving fans and when he yells, “shake the room,” everyone jumps up and down – literally shaking the arena.

There is something to be learned in both his content and his style. It takes true heart and a hell of a lot of skill to command an entire arena.

Back home, I reflected on all that I had absorbed… and it was much deeper than the flashing lights, jumping bodies, high fives and hugs.

I learned to “own my mind.”

Owning your mind is a game changer. Imagine what you would be doing, who you would be with, how much money you would be making if there was never a voice in your head that said, “How will that work? What do you think you’re doing? You’re never going to find someone at your age. You’re too fat! Who will ever pay you that much?” Right?

How much would you like to “own” your mind and take control of your life? It’s worth everything, right?

“When you’re in your head you’re dead” – Tony Robbins

Consider this…You have anywhere from 50,000 to 70,000 thoughts each day. When you catch a thought and focus on it, you tend to give it meaning. You make up a story, and you typically make it better or worse than it really is.

The trick to mastering your circumstance is to become the master of your mind. Become aware of your thoughts – both in the present and your desires for your future. Become a conscious creator of your life.

Sounds great, right? But how you ask?

Here are the top 13 mind hacks I learned from Tony Robbins

1) See life as it is, not better or worse than it is. All of us have a cultural conditioning. You likely had parents who either saw the glass half empty or half full. They may have been stuck in the past or worried for the future. It’s likely you didn’t grow up with parents who said, “be here now, honey.” So you have been pre-conditioned as an optimist or pessimist (and perhaps you rebelled again one or the other.) Discipline your mind. To be the master of your mind, you need to train your brain to see situations as they are. Ask yourself, “what do I know to be true in this situation?”

2) “You are not the manager of your circumstances, you are the creator of your life.” What is it that you want for your life? In work, in love, in lifestyle. What does it take to achieve that life? If you want to be the creator of your life, release the story of your limitations. Get clear on what you really want. See yourself living a life that you once thought was impossible. Focus on it. Obsess about it. The more clear you are about it, the faster it is to achieve.

3) Tune your Reticular Activation System (RAS). Your RAS determines what you notice at any given point in time. When you have successfully trained your brain through an obsessive focus on your desires, you begin to notice everything that will help you achieve your goal. You’re training your brain for success.

4) Take massive action. There’s no half-assed in Tony’s world. Massive action with effective execution is the cure all for everything. If you go down a path and it doesn’t work? Try something else. Keep changing your approach. If you are not sure how, model someone else who has been successful – they are not lucky, they are just doing something different than you are.

5) Do difficult things. “The only way you get self esteem is by doing difficult things.” The only thing that keeps you from doing difficult things and getting what you want is fear (False Evidence Appearing Real). Don’t ignore fear. Learn to dance with it. Use your fear as fuel for massive action. Turn that fear into excitement and make progress. (If you need help with this, call me now – if you don’t shift your fear, you’ll stall, and I don’t want that for you – and neither do you.)

“Divorce the story of your limitations and marry the story of your true nature.” – Tony Robbin

6) Change your words. Change your life. Pay attention words you say and think. When you attach a word to your experience, you become that word biochemically. What’s the content of your habitual vocabulary? (Scary thought for some, I’m sure.) Tony says, develop a transformational vocabulary (TV) – swap the words that cause stress and replace them with words that are softer, kinder (to yourself and others) and better reflect the actual circumstance. Is it a “disaster” or is it just “inconvenient?”

7) Turn your “shoulds” into “musts.” If you want to create lasting change in your life, you must adapt the belief that it must change and it must change now. Nothing you “should” do ever changes. When you have a “must,” you find a way.

“Your direction leads to your destiny.” – Tony Robbins

8) Make a 2mm shift. “Your past does not equal your future unless you live there.” Your desire to change is never about your ability, it’s about your motivation. How motivated are you to reach your goal? What is the pain of staying where you are? What small action if you took it, would make all the difference? What small shift in your habitual thinking would obliterate future suffering? What small change in execution would give you leverage and result in a completely different outcome? Think in 2mm increments. Small shifts = big results.

9) Praise yourself! Praise reinforces change. Create a new empowering pattern that replaces your old way of beating yourself up. Trade “I’m not good enough” for “I freaking rock!” It has an immediate physiological effect on your emotions.

10) Change your rituals. Do you eat too much? Drink too much? Sleep too much? Watch too much TV? You are your rituals. If you want to live an extraordinary life, treat yourself in extraordinary ways. Manage your mindset – develop rituals that include meditation, breathwork, imagery and gratitude. Get Tony’s 10-minute “priming” exercise here.

11) Move your body. Tony is all about STATE – managing your physical, emotional and spiritual state is a must at all times. Moving your body is a quick way to get an immediate shift in state. Try it. Jump up and down for 20 seconds to loud rocking music and see if you don’t feel a shift mentally as well as physically. We “shook the room” a hundred times in 4 days to keep in “state.”

“You are more than the concepts you’ve given yourself.” – Tony Robbins

12) Raise your standards. Look at where you have settled for less, accepted the status quo or let the past dictate your future. Training never stops when you want an extraordinary life. Get help. Read a book. Join a course. Learn how to get out of your own way and ask until you get it. Wire yourself for certainty of achieving your vision. If you don’t have the skills, you’ll find them.

13) Trade your expectations for appreciation. Or, as I always say, “what you focus your attention on grows.” Stop looking at what you don’t have and focus on being thankful for the abundance that already exists in your life. Appreciation results in more to appreciate.

It’s been nearly two weeks since my Tony Robbins experience and I’m still reaping the rewards of his training. I’ve taken massive action in my business and cleaned up my rituals, and have a renewed energy and focus – without fear.

Are you ready to step into an extraordinary life? Creating new habits creates a new firing and wiring in your brain that, with time, becomes automatic.

Now are you ready to make some noise? LET’S SHAKE THE ROOM!
